                                    For the Hillsborough Recorder

Fort Macon, June 02, 1861

At a meeting of the Orange Guards, held May the 31st, on motion, Lieut. Webb was called to the Chair, and Sergeant J. A. Graham requested to act as Secretary.  Two members of the Company were allowed to resign at their own request.  In order to arrive at the sense of the Company in regard to their willingness to remain together for the defense [sic] of our country, several were called upon to speak, and as far as could be told by the hearty and frequent applause which greeted the remarks, our Company will remain together as brothers, to defend to the last our mother State, and together with her’s the liberty of her Southern sisters.  On motion, A. W. Cheek, J. L. Haughton and Fred. Nash were appointed a Committee to draft resolutions expressive of the acknowledgements of the Company to the citizens of Orange, and ladies particularly, for the many kindnesses shown us since we came here.

The Committee reported the following resolutions:

Resolved: That the thanks of the company are due and are hereby tendered to our fellow-citizens of Orange for the many favors and attentions received at their hands since our arrival at Fort Macon.

Resolved: That the ladies are especially entitled to our gratitude for the concert given by them for our benefit and the thousand other favors to us.

A.W. CHEEK, Committee

J. L. HAUGHTON, Committee

FRED. NASH, Committee
